forgiveness
I posted this on my old blog, but tonight I got some news and found myself looping this song on iTunes. I am a big fan of The Eagles and Don Henly, but when I heard India.Arie’s version of “Heart of the Matter” my soul had never been so touched. I was at a moment in my life where these words meant more to me than anything my friends were trying to say to me. It really is about forgiveness, and I see that now more than I did a day, week, or month ago. Forgiveness isn’t just for the other person, but it’s for you too. The more you hold onto your old grudges – the more you revist old wounds and pick at the scab – the heavier your heart gets. These things don’t come easy, and the lyrics of the song highlight that:
“I’ve been trying to get down / To the heart of the matter / Because the flesh gets weak / And the ashes will scatter / But I think it’s about forgiveness.” I am working on it, and I hope the people out there with anger towards me for my faults are attempting to do the same thing.
